Best, Linear, Unbiased Prediction (BLUP)
BLUP is a method used to estimate an animal's breeding value (EBV) or its potential worth as a parent. This technology was developed by the late Dr. Brian Kennedy of the University of Guelph.

EBVs are much more accurate than phenotypic data collected on the animal for four main reasons:

  • They take into account the heritability of the trait
  • They use information on all related animals in the database
  • They take into account genetic differences between herds and generations
  • They account for environmental (management) influences on a trait thus allowing across-herd comparisons of animals
